Shelves FAQs
How do you install your shelves?
Some people purchase brackets online (we do not sell hardware, sorry). However, most people float our shelves using lag bolts! Our floating shelves are typically 1 1/2” - 1 3/4” thick which is thick enough for most to install with lag bolts if done correctly.
What size shelves can you build?
Our standard shelves are usually 1 1/2 - 1 3/4” thick, anywhere from 9-12” deep and built to the length you need.
That being said, all of our shelves are custom and we have the ability to mill our material to your exact dimensions needed. Need super long display shelves? Or wrap around shelves in your kitchen? Send us the details.
What material do you use?
We make a lot of our shelves out of reclaimed beech, poplar and heart pine. First we source and de-nail the material for your shelves. Then we will join and glue up the boards to get to your needed dimensions.
Lastly, we sand and custom stain/finish to your exact specifications!
What is the turnaround time?
Turnaround time depends on the size and number of shelves we are building along with our current workload. Typically, an order of shelves can take anywhere from 5 days to 2 weeks.
What style choices do I have?
First, you will need to decide if you would like “CLEAN” or “DIRTY TOP” material. After you decide on a material, we will stain/finish the shelves to the color you choose.
“CLEAN” material is wood we have put through the planer. It is smooth because we have milled off the top layer of natural patina. There will still be signs that the material is reclaimed like nail holes and knots, but no circle saw marks. If you are looking for clean shelves, we can help talk you through different species options that we have available based on your sizing needs. Examples of clean material below.
“DIRTY TOP” is when we retain the natural patina of the wood. While we will work with the wood to ensure that your shelves are flat and joined correctly, we keep the natural patina of the boards and do not take off the top layer of character. This means your shelves will still have the weathered look and oftentimes circle saw marks. Examples below.
Can I take the shelves unstained?
Sure thing. We can keep them natural if you choose.
Can I just buy a piece of wood to make a shelf myself?
You are welcome to purchase raw material from us. Keep in mind, however, that since our material is all reclaimed, it often needs some love before it’s ready to show off! Reclaimed lumber can be crooked and not necessarily flat until it is worked with properly (de-nailing, joining properly for glue up, planed, etc.)
Additionally, most of our 2” thick material is usually between 4-8” wide (so for shelves you will likely need to glue up multiple boards to get to the proper depth!).
